Tradition at Chevy Chase
Wheeling Park District, Illinois

This public course was in deteriorating condition due to limited upgrades and major, chronic flooding. Looking to compete better in an upscale market that was emerging at the time, the Park District invested in a comprehensive overall that included development of a series of storage ponds to retain and manage back-up flooding from the Des Plaines River. Fairways were raised or moved out of flood zones, and the existing creek was rerouted to minimize forced carries and increase speed of play while still accommodating storm water. The result was greater control of runoff, and an upgraded golf course with premier greens, tees, fairways and bunkers built in a traditional style that speaks to the legacy of the property and complements the historic clubhouse. The icing on the cake was Golf Inc.’s recognition of Traditions as the Daily-Fee Renovation of the Year.
