This 27-hole public facility, operated by the Schaumburg Park District, was looking to secure its place in the Chicago market as a premier golf destination. A cornerstone of the community, PD leaders were also looking to improve the long-term sustainability of the course for the next generation by addressing a failing infrastructure, including the reconstruction of the existing greens to USGA recommendations. Originally designed by famed architect, William Langford, redevelopment plans also called for the preservation and re-establishment of many of his strategic bunker and mound features, but with attention to current yardages, playability and maintenance needs. Bunker styling and construction techniques (i.e. aggregate liners) were employed to ease maintenance of sand while still allowing for dramatic lines and character. A permanent five-marker tee system was also incorporated, with focus on the addition of a forward tee system dubbed the “Life Tees”. The intent of this system is to encourage tee choice based on player ability, with the incentive to “graduate” from front to back and then back to front as skill sets changes with age.
